Workshop: Advocacy in Health Promotion

The workshop provides an introduction to advocacy and lobbying as legitimate health promotion activities. It will provide a framework and tools for developing an advocacy campaign and highlight the essential elements of successful advocacy. 

The workshop will cover:

  • what is advocacy and how does it fit into health promotion practice?
  • where should advocacy be targeted for the best results?
  • developing an advocacy campaign
  • techniques for advocacy - what to expect, practical tips

This workshop draws on Women's Health Victoria's experience of advocacy to prevent the objectification of women in media and advertising, and during the campaign for abortion law reform in Victoria.

Current topics in hospital falls prevention: Accreditation standards, managing delirium, patient engagement and education

This seminar provides clinicians and quality staff with up-to date information on best practice for minimising falls and related harm in hospitals.

The seminar will focus on current topics in hospital falls prevention, including:

  • managing delirium and cognitive impairment
  • initiatives for preventing falls in the confused patient
  • patient education, participation and engagement in falls prevention activities
  • an overview of the new accreditation standards for hospitals and understanding Standard 10, 'Preventing Falls and Harm from Falls'
  • tips for implementation the new standards in your hospital

Who should attend: Clinical leaders in nursing, medical and allied health who are responsible for falls prevention

Exercise for improving balance and bone mineral density: A workshop on assessment and exercise principles

This workshop provides skills and tools required to effectively identify people at risk of falls and prescribe targeted and effective exercise to reduce this risk and have a positive impact on their Bone Mineral Density (BMD).

Topics covered inlude:

  • an update on the research evidence
  • education and training in use of key falls risk screening assessments
  • assessment forms that you can use in your practice
  • exercise and information handouts for patients.
