Does Noobru Advantage Really Work?

Noobru Adantage contains several ingredients with clinical research showing that it can improve cognitive function, especially by improving focus and attention when working under stress. However, memory benefits might only be seen by older adults who take Noobru Advantage consistently for a long period.

Noobru Advantage Ingredients

According to their website, “Noobru™ contains a synergistic blend of 11 potent nootropics that promote and support healthy brain function.” But do these nootropic ingredients live up to scrutiny? We investigate.

Noobru Advantage packs several great ingredients to boost cognitive function and mental clarity. However, some doses of ingredients might not be at active levels, and a few of the forms of ingredients don’t have as much human clinical research behind them as we’d like.

Noobru Advantage Ingredients

Alpha GPC

Alpha glycerylphosphorylcholine, otherwise known as alpha GPC, provides a highly bioavailable form of choline, which is an essential vitamin crucial for brain health.[2] It’s important to build brain cell membranes and acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter associated with focus and memory. 

Studies suggest that alpha GPC can improve cognitive function, reduce brain fog, and has neuroprotective effects. It might even be effective in older adults fighting cognitive declines, such as in Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.[3] 

However, daily supplementation of choline in older adults might also increase the risk of stroke[4] and atherosclerosis.[5] Studies suggest this could be due to a negative impact on the gut microbiota and an increase in inflammatory signaling.

Aside from the cognitive benefits, alpha GPC might also improve physical performance by increasing muscle strength and performance[6] similar to the effects of caffeine. Comparing different doses, this study showed that a lower dose of 250 milligrams might be more effective than a higher dose of 500 milligrams. It also seems to improve recovery after strenuous exercise.[7]

Noobru provides 120 milligrams of alpha GPC per sachet, which might not be enough to see noticeable benefits.

L-Theanine

Theanine enhances cognitive function by increasing the brain’s alpha waves and modifying levels of the brain chemicals glutamate,[8] gamma-aminobutyric acid or GABA, dopamine, and serotonin.[9] While L-theanine is normally found in green tea, Noobru includes L-theanine as Suntheanine®, a proprietary synthetic form.

Suntheanine is considered one of the best commercially-available theanine supplements because it’s the only one that contains exclusively L-theanine with no D-theanine,[15] the other enantiomer, or chemical configuration of the molecule. 

Enantiomers are like left and right hands – they are mirror images of one another, and they usually have different modes of action in the body. In the case of theanine, animal studies suggest that, compared to L-theanine, D-theanine exhibits significantly worse absorption[16] in the gut and is more readily excreted from the body. 

However, green tea provides 98.7% L-theanine, and studies suggest that the bioavailability of L-theanine from green tea vs. Suntheanine[8] is similar. Nevertheless, you’d have to drink 10 cups of green tea to get 200 milligrams of L-theanine, which is the amount provided per serving of Noobru Advantage.

KSM-66® Ashwagandha

Ashwagandha, otherwise known by its scientific name Withania somnifera, is a herb used in dietary supplements to help treat a range of ailments.[17] Noobru uses KSM-66®, a patented ashwagandha root extract produced using a milk extraction process. For this reason, it’s not suitable for those with a milk allergy.

There’s not yet strong clinical evidence that ashwagandha is safe or effective for treating any specific health condition. Nevertheless, a range of animal studies and small clinical trials suggest that supplementing ashwagandha might

Ashwagandha seems to counteract stress activation by regulating the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis,[21] otherwise known as the HPA axis. Cell-based studies also suggest that ashwagandha might have neuroprotective effects.[23]

However, clinical trials tend to use between 300-500 milligrams of ashwagandha per day. Noobru contains just 100 milligrams per sachet, which might not be enough to have a noticeable impact on health.

Choline Bitartrate

Did we mention that choline is a newly-discovered essential nutrient most of us are deficient in? If that’s you, you might be more likely to develop nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and neurodegenerative disorders[24] such as Alzheimer’s disease.[25] 

It’s especially important for postmenopausal women to supplement choline[24] because they lack a hormone that helps our body synthesize our own choline: estrogen. Vegans will also have difficulty getting enough premade choline from their diet.[26]

That’s why Noobru has included another form of choline in Noobru Advantage called choline bitartrate. 

Theoretically, all this sounds great. However, we don’t yet have enough data to recommend everyone supplements choline – especially not for short-term cognitive performance. Also, there are some risks, as mentioned earlier. 

Small human trials haven’t found any effect of supplementing two grams of choline daily on memory[27] in young, healthy adults. Nevertheless, animal studies suggest that supplementing choline throughout the lifespan reduces amyloid-β plaque load[28] in older age, a protein that builds up in the brain of those with Alzheimer’s disease.

Noobru Advantage provides 250 milligrams of choline bitartrate.

N-Acetyl L-Tyrosine

This is a form of L-tyrosine, a precursor to dopamine – our reward neurotransmitter that helps us sharpen mental focus and fight brain fog. 

Tyrosine is a non-essential amino acid found in various protein-rich foods. Its precursor is phenylalanine,[29] the essential amino acid you really need. 

But even though you don’t necessarily need to consume tyrosine, very small studies suggest that supplementing L-tyrosine might improve cognitive performance under stressful[30] situations and deep thinking.[31] In fact, compared to a placebo, military personnel given two grams of L-tyrosine per day were found to perform better cognitively.[32]

However, dopamine is also one of our stress hormones and is itself the precursor to another stress hormone, adrenaline. So some stress-sensitive types might want to avoid L-tyrosine supplements. Moreover, aside from being used in intravenous infusions,[33] we don’t have much clinical evidence for the benefits of oral N-Acetyl L-Tyrosine over L-tyrosine.

Noobru contains just 50 milligrams of N-Acetyl L-Tyrosine, which probably won’t be enough to have significant cognitive benefits.
