Seven times higher risk of liver cancer in obese

The cancer-associated genetic mutation found in the PNPLA3 gene is very common among Scandinavians, where it occurs in one of twenty individuals. The study is based on the extensive SOS study (Swedish Obese Subjects), comparing mortality and morbidity in 4000 Swedish obese subjects.

The study is the first to demonstrate that a genetic mutation contributes to increasing the risk of developing hepatocellular carcinoma in individuals with severe obesity.
