Does your child stutter?

Participants in the Bendigo Fluency Intensive ProgramA highly respected intensive treatment program for adolescents aged 10 years and older has been trialled in Bendigo this week. Six local adolescents took part in the Bendigo Fluency Intensive Program in what is hoped will be the first of many regular clinics to be held in Bendigo.

La Trobe University’s speech pathology coordinator, Dr Susan Block said that the initiative has had significant success in Melbourne for over 20 years. She said she is hopeful that there will be sufficient interest in the program from residents of Bendigo and surrounds to make it viable to run regular sessions.

‘We’ve been conducting the program in the excellent new La Trobe Rural Health School facilities on the University’s Bendigo campus,’ said Dr Block.

‘Providing there is sufficient demand we hope the clinic will be the first of its type to be regularly offered to local families, reducing the need to travel to Melbourne for specialist and intensive treatment options.’

Dr Block said La Trobe University’s first cohort of final year speech pathologists have gained valuable work experience under the supervision of experienced speech pathologists from La Trobe University, the Catholic Education Office and the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development.

‘One of the best ways to increase a speech pathologist’s confidence in working with people who stutter is to provide them with relevant and stimulating clinical experiences during their professional preparation.’

Parents of adolescents who stutter are urged to contact Dr David Azul at the LRHS, phone 5444 7556; Ms Sheryn Long at the Catholic Education Office, phone 5443 2377; or Ms Madeline Leyden at the Department of Early Childhood Education, phone 5438 1254 to register their interest in attending this program in the future.
