Healthy ageing, long life

Ageing populations

In the lead up to World Health Day (7 April), the Alfred Medical Research and Education Precinct (AMREP) in conjunction with Diabetes Australia and Diabetes Victoria, is presenting the 6th AMREP World Health Day Forum, Healthy Ageing in a Global World: Opportunities and Challenges.

The keynote address will be presented by the President of the International Diabetes Federation Professor Jean Claude Mbanya, one of the foremost medical advocates for diabetes in Africa. Professor Mbanya was a driving force behind last year’s United Nations General Assembly meeting on the global crisis of non-communicable diseases, a meeting which set important worldwide health targets.

Director of Monash Research for an Ageing Society Professor Colette Browning said healthy ageing was a primary concern of health experts in all parts of the world.

“As health professionals we need to develop ways to help maintain the health of the world’s population as they age and better prepare them to cope with the changing world,” Professor Browning said.

“Good health practices mean older men and women not only live longer, but also extend their active involvement in all levels of society. Ageing concerns each and every one of us, no matter what our circumstances or where we live.

“Through the forum we hope to get people talking about health and ageing; to get policymakers, politicians, and the general public of all ages to take action to create societies that appreciate and acknowledge older people and the contribution they make to society.”

Professor Mbanya, will be joined by leading experts from Monash University as well as Dr Aabha Chaudhary the chairperson of Anugraha, an Indian NGO dedicated to the welfare of senior citizens and underprivileged rural communities, Dr Dharmapriya Wesumperuma, the Head of Programs – East Asia Pacific at HelpAge International, the Honourable David Davis MP, Minister for Health and Ageing, Mika Kontiainen, the Director of Disease Prevention and Control at AusAID and Dr Wendy Holmes from the Centre for International Health at the Burnet Institute.

World Health Day marks the anniversary of the founding of the World Health Organisation in 1948.

The 6th AMREP World Health Day Forum will be held at the Parkview Hotel, 562 St Kilda Rd Melbourne from 9am – 5pm on Tuesday 3 April, 2012.
