Does It Really Work?
Thryve’s Gut Health Test is an at-home test that analyzes your poop to provide important information about your gut microbiome. Using the information in your gut microbiome report, you can make adjustments to your diet and lifestyle to resolve gut issues.
Thryve (now Ombre) has mapped out thousands of bacterial strains to determine their unique function in the body. They’ve also analyzed hundreds of foods and supplements to better understand the impact each one has on improving gut health. The Thryve microbiome test is designed to be paired with their personalized probiotic blends which are customized to the bacteria found in your gut.
Whether Thryve’s probiotics really work is up for debate and varies from one individual to another. As is true with other probiotic supplements, it may take up to 3 months to really see results with your Thryve probiotic supplement. Results may vary as well depending on the type and severity of the digestive issues identified in your gut health report.
What’s Inside Thryve’s Gut Health Test?
The Thryve (now Ombre) gut microbiome test is just that – a test. It consists of a swab and a collection tube that you send back to the company in a prepaid shipping box. The test is simply one component of the Thryve Gut Health Program.
Once you receive the results of your gut microbiome testing, you need to start using the probiotic blend Thryve customizes according to your gut score and the unique combination of beneficial gut bacteria and pathogenic bacteria present in your gut. In addition to taking these probiotic supplements, you should follow Thryve’s personalized diet advice as well.
Depending on the bacterial species identified in your gut, Thryve recommends personalized probiotics based on your gut report. Some of the probiotic strains that may be included in your probiotic blend may include:
- Enterococcus faecium
- Lactobacillus acidophilus
- Lactobacillus rhamnosus
- Bifidobacterium longum
- Saccharomyces boulardii
- Bifidobacterium lactis
- Lactobacillus helveticus
- Lactobacillus reuteri
- Lactobacillus plantarum
- Lactobacillus paracasei
- Bifidobacterium bifidum
In addition to their customized probiotics, Thryve kit offers a limited selection of probiotic supplements. These include Endless Energy, Healthy Gut, Metabolic Booster, and Rise.
Endless Energy
Packed with targeted probiotics, this supplement supports digestive and metabolic health for optimal energy. It contains 5 billion CFU from three specific strains:
- Lactobacillus rhamnosus
- Saccharomyces boulardii
- Bifidobacterium bifidum
Combined with sunfiber, these bacterial strains may enhance natural energy production,[1] support physical and mental performance, and boost digestion and nutrient absorption.
Healthy Gut
Formulated based on microbiome research, this supplement supports digestion as well as a healthy immune system. It contains strains backed by scientific research shown to decrease the frequency of abdominal pain, diarrhea, and constipation. It contains 100 billion CFU from the following strains:
- Lactobacillus acidophilus
- Enterococcus faecium
- Lactobacillus paracasei
- Lactobacillus helveticus
- Lactobacillus rhamnosus
- Lactobacillus plantarum
- Bifidobacterium lactis
- Saccharomyces boulardii
Thryve claims that the probiotics in this supplement[2] support bowel movement regularity, address symptoms linked to leaky gut and IBS, and reduce bloating caused by gut imbalances.
Metabolic Booster
A healthy metabolism supports weight loss and improved energy levels – this supplement is designed to support metabolic health. By improving bacterial balance in the gut’s microbiome, this supplement may help improve nutrient absorption and cellular communication. It contains 10 billion CFU from the following strains:
- Lactobacillus acidophilus
- Enterococcus faecium
- Lactobacillus helveticus
- Lactobacillus rhamnosus
- Bifidobacterium lactis
- Saccharomyces boulardii
- Bifidobacterium longum
- Lactobacillus reuteri
Based on scientific evidence, Thryve claims this supplement[3] may help support a healthy metabolism, reduce inflammation that can cause weight gain, and boost nutrient absorption as well as cellular communication.
Rise
To support a healthy population of beneficial bacteria in the gut, prebiotics may be necessary. This particular supplement helps support a healthy microbiome by providing the dietary fibers bacterial cells need to thrive. The ingredients include:
- PHGG Sunfiber
- PreticX
- Acacia
- Baobab
Scientifically proven[4] to boost beneficial gut bacteria, this prebiotic is fast-absorbing and can help relieve various aspects of digestive discomfort including gas, bloating, and constipation. It may also help suppress inflammation to support immune system health and promote weight loss. Each serving contains 10 calories with 6g carbohydrate and 4g dietary fiber.
Health Benefits Of Thryve Gut Health Test
Thryve’s microbiome test results are compiled using their proprietary public research algorithm. It uses every single microbiome research article (of which there are more than 50,000) to grade recommendations using the brand’s research confidence algorithm. The brand has also published a white paper with 99 patients who have completed the program. The results show the following two things:
- Improvements in self-reported symptoms in areas like digestion, weight management, mental health, and immunity.
- Improvements in gut microbiome compared to before with an increase in probiotics, a decrease in pathogenic gut bacteria, and changes in diversity.
According to the Thryve website, the personalized probiotics and food plan recommended with Thryve’s Gut Health Test have the potential to provide the following benefits:
- Prevention of leaky gut and IBS symptoms
- Improved energy levels and alertness without caffeine crashes
- Increased protection against colds and viruses
- Reduced inflammation-related weight gain
- Improved cardiovascular health
- Increased serotonin production to boost mental health
Though Thryve’s products and other probiotics are supported by scientific evidence to address various health concerns, Thryve does not claim to provide medical advice and Thryve tests are not diagnostic. Their tests provide some of the most comprehensive actionable insights on the market but you should still consult your doctor before making any changes.
Potential Side Effects
Generally speaking, probiotics appear to be safe. Thryve comments that their probiotics have very few reports of minor side effects. The only concerns are with certain strains which, when taken in high doses, may cause temporary constipation.
While there don’t appear to be any significant concerns associated with probiotics, some sources suggest there isn’t enough evidence to answer questions about safety. According to a 2011 report[5] released by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, “the current literature is not well equipped to answer questions on the safety of probiotics in intervention studies with confidence.”
A 2015 article[6] published in Clinical Infectious Diseases notes that “no two probiotic strains can be expected to have exactly the same clinical effect.” As such, it may be difficult to predict the potential side effects of a customized probiotic blend.
How To Take Thryve Probiotics?
To complete your microbiome test, you simply need to use the collection kit to swab a stool sample and send it in. Once you’ve received the results of Thryve’s gut health test, you should follow the food recommendations and start taking your customized probiotics. According to the Thryve website, you should take two probiotic capsules daily with or without food.

5 stars
“I had been trying other probiotics but wasn’t getting anywhere with my gas problem. I think this idea of getting personalized probiotics as a result of a gut test is a great idea and worked perfectly for me in my situation. What is odd is that this was a bit of a last ditch effort because I had been using other probiotics without success so I thought I was just sensitive to certain foods. I tried quitting coffee and cheese and various other foods without success. I highly recommend Thrive and their gut test/probiotic solution.”
3 stars
“Haven’t noticed much of a difference in my symptoms. It’s been 4 months. Not sure if this is truly a unique formulation to me? Customer service is not always available and they don’t really check in with you.”
1 stars
“I ordered probiotics from them and never received them even after a month and a 1/2. I then requested info about it threw email bc there isn’t a # to call. I got a response that they would check into. I then had to repeatedly contact them via email bc they would say they were making it a priority and never would. I had to threaten them I would pursue fraudulent charges because no one was getting back with me in any timely manner. I’m talking days of giving them time to respond. Then I got an immediate response with a cancellation. I then ordered two test for my friend. It’s been close to a month indicating it was shipping and this status stayed this way for a month! I emailed them for a refund and got an immediate response. They have been absolutely horrible! Will use and recommend anyone but them at this point.
Final Thought: Is it Worth Buying?
Thryve offers a unique concept in terms of a personalized gut health solution. Their microbiome test appears to be very easy to take, though you should expect to wait at least three weeks to receive your results. There are some concerns about whether the probiotics themselves are truly customized, but many customers have experienced good results with them.
Overall, Thryve appears to be a decent company and their test results are backed by publicly available research. We’d still recommend consulting your doctor for serious digestive health concerns, but the test from Thryve can provide useful insight into what issues you might be having and how to resolve them effectively.
