At the Spine Center at Glen Cove Hospital, spine surgeons, anesthesiologists, radiologists, nurses, physician assistants and rehabilitation specialists provide patients with a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to back and neck pain and spinal disorders. Heading spine services since 2004 is Vincent Leone, MD, director of orthopedic spine surgery at Glen Cove Hospital. To meet the community’s growing demand for spine surgery and other treatment options, Glen Cove Hospital recently appointed spine surgeon Sanjeev Suratwala, MD, to the Department of Orthopedics. He will work closely with Dr. Leone in performing the latest spinal treatments and interventions to relieve patients’ pain, improving mobility and their quality of life.

Both surgeons are board-certified in orthopedics and completed spinal surgery fellowships. Dr. Leone has been treating spine patients at Glen Cove since 1995, bringing advanced spinal techniques to this community. Dr. Suratwala completed a prestigious spinal surgery fellowship at the Twin Cities Spine Center in Minneapolis, MN, and has been in practice for several years.

“Patients at Glen Cove benefit from the expertise of fellowship-trained spinal surgeons and a team of healthcare professionals dedicated to delivering quality spinal care,” said Dr. Leone. “In addition, the spine care team has access to our state-of-the-art Radiology Department, and patients can receive rehabilitation services at the hospital if needed for a complete continuum of care.

“With the expertise of Dr. Suratwala, the spine center has expanded its coverage so patients will have improved access to spine experts,” said Dr. Leone. “We are lucky to have Dr. Suratwala join our community and the spine center at Glen Cove Hospital.”

Spine Conditions
The spine team at Glen Cove treats the following conditions: arthritis, herniated disks, spinal stenosis (narrowing of the spinal canal), pinched nerves, sciatica, bone spurs, neck pain, back pain, scoliosis, traumatic injuries and degenerative and congenital conditions.

Common Procedures
Whenever possible, the spine program team tries conservative treatment options first, such as medication, rehabilitation and spinal injections. If conservative treatments fail to alleviate pain, less invasive surgical techniques are considered. Some conditions may require spinal surgeons to perform traditional or “open” surgery. Among the surgeries performed are: kyphoplasty, a newer treatment for spinal fractures and the X-STOP implant to treat lumbar (low back) spinal stenosis as well as the latest techniques to treat scoliosis, or curvature of the spine. Complex reconstructive surgeries of the spine are often handled more effectively and efficiently by two spine surgeons, which may result in a quicker recovery.

Systemwide Approach
As part of the North Shore-LIJ Health System, the surgeons at Glen Cove’s Spine Center are members of both the Institute for Orthopedic Science and the Harvey Cushing Institutes of Neuroscience Spine Institute where they collaborate on strategies to provide the highest level of medical, surgical and therapeutic care to spine patients as well as participate in spinal research.
