Thanks to the transplant of toes to hands, these persons can reincorporate themselves into to the world of work and carry out a completely normal life.
Most cases treated are trauma-related, i.e. as a result of accidents. But there is also a small percentage of cases caused by congenital illnesses or tumours. As a consequence, the amputations of the hands are amongst the most traumatic damage that can be suffered today at a personal, work and aesthetic level.
To date, surgery has enabled the replantation of the amputated limbs themselves. But these reimplants do not always function and there are times when the limbs of the patient cannot be used, because they are in a bad state or they have lost them. To solve these cases, microsurgery enables transplanting tissues from one place to another, without having to have recourse to prosthesis. This is how the possibility arose of transplanting the toes of a foot to the hands – a type of surgery that enables reconstructing a hand using the toes of the patient’s own foot.
Transference with microsurgery of the toes of a foot to the hand arose thus in order to reconstruct amputated hands and give the patient back the ability to use basic pincer movements of this limb. With time, experience of the technique and its applications were gained and currently transplant operations of the toes of a foot to the hands are undertaken to correct amputations of a single finger or part of a finger. Thus it is possible to reconstruct complete fingers or to simply add the missing part, adapting the solution to the problem and reducing the trauma in the patient. In countries such as Taiwan more than 2,000 operations of this type have already been carried out; in France more than 500; and in Spain more than 300.
The wrist through the eye of a camera
Arthroscopy of the wrist is another of the novel techniques that the Traumatología XXI team provides for its patients, thanks to the incorporation of doctor Francisco Javier García Bernal. This technique consists of reconstructing damaged wrists using a camera and one that is a milestone in the recovery of the use of this joint. It enables detecting and solving the problem from inside the joint itself, thus enabling a more precise diagnosis and, thereby, the perfect reconstruction of the wrist, without leaving scars, which accelerates the process of rehabilitation.
The surgeon inserts a 2.7 millimetre diameter camera into the articulation through small incisions of one centimetre and, while observing the interior of the joint on a monitor, operates more precisely on the damaged wrist.
