The article “Changes in Sexual Functions of Female Patients After Bariatric Surgery: Relationship with Body Image, Depression, and Anxiety” reports improvement in the total Sexual Experiences score —and in subscores for drive, arousal, and orgasm—but not in the satisfaction score 6 months after bariatric surgery among the female study participants, who had an average age of 41 ± 8 years. Scores for body image, depression, and anxiety also improved significantly after the weight-loss surgery.
“I find it courageous of the authors to address this frequently overlooked or undiscussed aspect of psychosocial health,” says Editor-in-Chief Edward Lin, DO, MBA, Surgical Director, Emory Bariatrics, and Director, Gastroesophageal Treatment Center, Emory University School of Medicine, Atlanta, GA.
