The study, being presented this week at the 2010 Annual Meeting of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, reviewed known retinal injury thresholds from studies of mammalian retinae. Results showed that Type 1 and Type 2 photochemically induced retinal injury have been well reported. It was determined that exposure limits were not needed for Type 1, which is typically seen in animals exposed to fluorescent lamps for many hours. Type 2 results from focal exposures to short-wavelengths for fractions of an hour; however, the chromophore is still debated. According to the abstract, the luminous efficacy of radiation suggests the damage mechanism could be due to saturation of cone-opsin regeneration in the retinal pigment epithelium.
The evaluators concluded: “Although previously developed retinal exposure limits are still relevant for the awake, task-oriented eye, this is not the case for ophthalmic instrument exposure—particularly to the anesthetized eye during surgery.”
