CBD oil is a natural alternative that can also be used. While CBD oil for neuropathy has not officially been approved, data from many studies have shown that using CBD and other hemp and cannabis-derived cannabinoids can be used to improve symptoms of neuropathy[3]. Does CBD Oil For Nerve Pain Works?

What is neuropathy?

Neuropathy is a condition where your nerves have been damaged or don’t work properly. Your nervous system is divided into two parts:

  • Central nervous system: the brain and spinal cord
  • Peripheral nervous system: the nerves in your body that connects to the brain and spinal cord

Normally, the nerves in your peripheral nervous system sends messages to the central nervous system to signal your sense of touch. This includes feeling temperature and pain. With neuropathy, your nerves may be sending signals too often which can lead to different symptoms such as numbness, tingling, or even constant pain. [Cleveland Clinic][6]

What causes neuropathy?

Did you know that neuropathy doesn’t always have a cause? Sometimes, there is no clear cause for your nerve pain. However, here are some of the more common causes of nerve pain:

  • Diabetes: Diabetes, also known as high blood sugar, is the most common reason people develop neuropathy. It typically damages the nerves in your hands and feet and is called diabetic neuropathy.
  • Injury or trauma: Your nerves can be damaged directly by an injury. Injuries usually compress or cut into the nerve which leads to inflammation and pain.
  • Inflammatory or infectious diseases: Some diseases which affect your autoimmune system can increase the inflammation in your body. Examples of autoimmune diseases include rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, or Guillain-Barre syndrome. Infections such as shingles, HIV, and hepatitis C can also cause nerve pain.
  • Diet and medications: A healthy diet is important to get the right nutrients to your body. Nerve function requires certain nutrients. Poor diet, certain medications, or even exposure to toxic substances like lead or mercury can affect your nerve function and cause pain. [Cleveland Clinic][7]

Does CBD help with nerve pain?

Studies have suggested that CBD can be an effective supplement for helping with nerve pain. It’s thought that CBD works by stopping or slowing pain signals from your nerves to your brain.

This happens when CBD stimulates cannabinoid receptors called CB1 and CB2 receptors. Stimulating these receptors lead to an analgesic effect, or pain relief, by decreasing the signals being sent from your nerves.

These cannabinoid receptors may also help limit your inflammation to your body[8]. Since nerve pain is often caused by autoimmune disorders, lowering your body’s inflammatory response can also help reduce nerve pain.

CBD oil contains the active ingredient cannabidiol which helps stimulat these cannabinoid receptors. Other products that contain cannabidiol such as gummies and sprays may have the same psychoactive effects.

CBD Oil Heals Nerve Damage

As we mentioned above, nerve damage and pain can be caused by many conditions. These conditions include inflammatory response, injury, or some other disorder. Typically, the nerves are under constant stress and can signal pain to the body constantly.

Laboratory models and animal testing has shown[9] that CBD may protect and heal nerves. It’s suggested that the use of CBD may prevent cell death with antioxidants and boost anti-inflammation properties. This means that CBD could possibly protect nerves from further damage and allow them to heal. More studies are needed to understand whether CBD can actually heal nerve damage.

CBD oil for chronic pain

Chronic pain is when you have pain over a long period of time. The most common treatments for chronic pain include tylenol, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), and opioids. Using CBD and cannabidiol products have often been considered a natural alternative to prescription medications to manage chronic pain and inflammation [Lynch 2015][10].

Cannabidiol has been studied for a variety of pain types, including chronic pain. A large review of studies reported[11] that people who used cannabinoids had reduction in their chronic pain by at least at 30% more than people who were given a placebo (a drug with active ingredient).

There has been evidence that suggests that using CBD products may reduce the need for prescription opioid treatment. Data shows that states with legalized cannabis use filled less prescriptions[12] for different conditions, including pain. One study also reported[13] that there were fewer opioid-related deaths in Colorado after legalization.

How to use CBD oil for neuropathy?

CBD comes in many different forms. It is up to you to choose what form of drug administration you prefer. CBD for ingestion includes oils, tinctures, supplemental pills, sprays and inhalers, gummies, and even powders.

Other options are CBD-infused edibles such honey or chocolates. There are also topical CBD that can be applied to your skin such as creams and lotions.

Each product may be taken differently and often comes in a range of dosages, so it’s important to read the instructions before using CBD products. You have flexibility in picking the product that suits your pain needs and treatment plan.

CBD Oil for Neuropathy Dosage

The dosage of CBD you should take for neuropathy or nerve pain can vary based on many factors, including:

  • What condition you are treating
  • Your body weight
  • Your experience and tolerance to CBD
  • How you are taking it (drops, gummies, etc.)

Epidiolex was the first prescription drug[14] approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) with cannabidiol. Although the drug is used to treat seizures, it may help us understand a maximum tolerable dose range. For people taking Epidiolex, the recommended range is between 2.5 milligrams per kilogram (mg/kg) twice a day up to a maximum of 10 mg/kg twice a day.

You should talk with your doctor about taking CBD for your condition. They can help determine what dose is best for you. Usually, you should start at low doses of a few milligrams first to see how your body reacts to CBD. From there, you can slowly increase from low doses to higher doses until you achieve the desired effects. Last thing is to try various CBD oils to find out the best CBD oil for nerve pain & neuropathy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Side effects caused by CBD can include feeling tired or sleepy, diarrhea and reduced appetite [VanDolah 2019][15].

Will CBD make me high?

Can I use CBD oil for diabetic neuropathy or nerve?

Yes, diabetic neuropathy is a specific type of neuropathy or nerve pain that is caused by diabetes or high blood sugar. CBD oil works similar across all types of neuropathy by decreasing inflammation and pain signals at your nerves. [Vučković 208][17].
