Fibromyalgia is characterized by widespread chronic pain, fatigue, and depressive episodes without a physical cause identifiable for these symptoms. It may affect up to 10%[1] of the population and is responsible for high healthcare costs, increased morbidity, and reduced quality of life and productivity. Patients often complain of “brain fog,” a type of mental fuzziness that clouds one’s cognitive abilities and affects focus and attention.

There is no cure for fibromyalgia, and most treatment options have shown limited effectiveness. Treatment options include anti-inflammatories, anti-seizure, and antidepressant drugs.

The effects of CBD make it a natural choice in people with fibromyalgia as CBD is anti-inflammatory and may help with chronic pain, especially high-quality, full-spectrum oils with a trace of THC. Evidence supporting the use of cannabis in chronic pain is plentiful but limited with regard to CBD and fibromyalgia. The trace amounts of THC[2] found in full-spectrum oils may help process pain responses through its action in the endocannabinoid system. The safety, lack of side effects, and potential benefits associated with using CBD make it attractive as a treatment choice regardless of the type of CBD chosen.

Best CBD Oils For Fibromyalgia (March. 2024)

CBD Oil For Fibromyalgia

Cannabis has been used historically since ancient times to treat pain syndromes. Recent evidence has shown that CBD oil may be a promising treatment strategy for people with fibromyalgia. Furthermore, CBD oil exerts anti-inflammatory effects[3] that can play a positive role in pain management, pain being a primary symptom of fibromyalgia.

CBD, however, is just one of over 100 different cannabinoids in the cannabis plant. When we say cannabis has been used to treat a condition, we are talking about the entire entourage of cannabinoids, not just CBD.

Essentially, cannabis plants contain more THC, and hemp contains more CBD. CBD oils are typically extracted from hemp and have less than 0.3% THC. Hemp and cannabis relate to the plant’s name, make-up, and classification. Full-spectrum CBD oil comes the closest to cannabis in the composition of cannabinoids, but the difference in THC is significant.  The majority of studies on fibromyalgia have been done with cannabis or synthetic cannabis (nabilone).[4] Studies using CBD oils for fibromyalgia treatment are mostly observational and lacking in scientific rigor. Studies relative to CBD’s impact on the symptoms related to fibromyalgia expressions, such as sleep, pain, and anxiety,  are more readily located, however.

Spruce is a family-run CBD brand that offers high-quality, lab-tested, full-spectrum CBD oil made from one of the finest, oldest hemp strains in the United States.

  • 100% Natural
  • No pesticides
  • Full-spectrum
  • Family-owned business
  • Limited potencies

Established in 2018, Spruce is a CBD brand based in Raleigh, North Carolina. The company prides itself on making American-made CBD products and some of the best CBD oils available.

Spruce stands out from the competition in several ways. For instance, it’s a family-run business, which is unusual in the CBD industry.

Its CBD source is from a time-tested strain of hemp cultivated in the United States for over two hundred years. The CBD oil is harvested from organically grown hemp from farms in Kentucky and North Carolina.

Spruce is also unique for using a moonshine (alcohol) extraction method to isolate a CBD-rich extract from hemp. Alcohol extraction has proven to be safe and effective.

CBD experts derive Spruce’s CBD oil from a lab-tested hemp extract, and it provides all of the cannabinoids, terpenes, and other beneficial compounds found in the plant. The THC content is <0.3%. The downside of using a full-spectrum product is that you may not pass a drug test depending on your dosage and test form even though there are only trace amounts of THC present in the oil.

It has a pleasing peppermint taste and comes in 30 ml bottles with two CBD potencies: 25 mg of CBD per ml (750 mg total) and 80 mg of CBD per ml (2400 mg total).

The company carries a wide range of products, including topicals, lotions, balms, tinctures, oils, and CBD capsules.

Free shipping is available, and a full refund is available if you return the products within 30 days.

The company uses third-party testing to make sure the product is pure, has a high-quality ingredient, and shows an absence of heavy metals.

Spruce CBD should be an excellent CBD oil for fibromyalgia.

these are indicators of purity and standards of quality.

Joy Organic prides itself on using only the finest U.S.-grown hemp. Standards at American hemp farms are higher than those in other countries.

The CBD oil products come in four flavors, orange, tranquil, natural, and mint. The four flavors come in different potencies, 250, 500, 1000, and 1500 mg per 30 ml bottle.

The oil itself undergoes a process to make it more bioavailable, a nanotechnology

emulsion technique that involves breaking down the molecule into smaller, more digestible components.

  • Gluten-free
  • Non-GMO
  • Vegetarian
  • Lacks high potency options

This refined full-spectrum CBD oil is extracted from agricultural hemp using only soil, water, and sunlight. Natural hemp oil packed full of cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids, plus the fatty acids that increase the intake of mono- and polyunsaturated fats, make up the basis for these CBD products.

What Is Fibromyalgia?

Fibromyalgia is a constellation of symptoms with no obvious or known origin. Symptoms are disabling and chronic in nature, often unmanageable, and there is no effective treatment for fibromyalgia and no cure for fibromyalgia.

Symptoms

Predominant symptoms of fibromyalgia are widespread pain and inflammation, sleep disturbances, extreme fatigue, episodes of depression, and tenderness on palpation to 11 of 18 designated spots.  About 20% of those who experience the pain of fibromyalgia also experience anxiety and depression. Cognitive disturbances are common and cause feelings of “spaciness” or feelings of disorientation, headaches, and memory difficulties. Numbness and tingling may occur. The symptoms must also last longer than three months to be classified as fibromyalgia.

People with rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, or spinal arthritis are more likely to develop fibromyalgia. CBD for fibromyalgia is likely to be helpful in the anti-inflammatory pain of arthritis as well.

Causes

While some rheumatologists think of fibromyalgia as a specific pain disorder and central sensitivity syndrome, neurologists classify it as a neuropathy. In psychiatry, fibromyalgia is classified as a functional somatic disorder. Clearly, the cause of fibromyalgia symptoms is not known, and many theories exist to explain the symptoms and causes of the symptoms.

Indeed, there are biological and genetic factors[6] to fibromyalgia. There are environmental triggers, such as trauma or mechanical injury. Neuroendocrine abnormalities may exist, such as in the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis. There may be autonomic central nervous system abnormalities that are responsible for sleep disturbances or heart rate abnormalities. Enhanced pain perception may exist. The causes of fibromyalgia are multiple.

CBD Dosage For Fibromyalgia

The median CBD dose was 39 mg[7] in a group of fibromyalgia patients treated with medical cannabis. The presence of THC in the treatment mix confounds the results but does give some dosage information. Prior to treatment, 193 patients reported a high level of pain, but after six months of treatment, only nineteen patients reported a high level of pain. The dose of CBD isolate used to tame the anxiety in stage fright was 600 mg.

A 2020 study[8] using 10 mg of THC and 200 mg of CBD is being conducted to reverse insomnia and promote sleep in 20 chronic insomnia patients. The effects of CBD seem to be amplified with a little THC added to the treatment although symptomatic relief[9] of some symptoms has been noticed with CBD without the THC at a dosage of 25 mg. Dosage ranges in the studies have been from 25 mg – 600 mg. This wide range depends on the type of symptoms being alleviated, the type of oil chosen, the length of the study period (regardless of the time symptoms were relieved), and individual variations in metabolism and absorption.

Does CBD Oil Help Fibromyalgia

The use of CBD oils to treat the side effects of many chronic diseases related to fibromyalgia has been documented. For example, CBD is beneficial in sleep disorders, a common complaint associated with fibromyalgia. Side effects of anxiety,[10] such as trouble with public speaking, have been demonstrated to improve with the use of CBD isolate. Using CBD oil for fibromyalgia may help lessen the sleep-related side effects of fibromyalgia and may impact depression related to anxiety.

CBD oils for fibromyalgia may help with anti-inflammation and, thus, pain.  People with fibromyalgia using a CBD product may experience a lessening of symptoms associated with the disorder more effectively than with current treatments, but more research needs to be conducted on using CBD oil for the treatment of fibromyalgia.

How To Use CBD For Fibromyalgia

Taking CBD oil or utilizing CBD products may alleviate many of the symptoms of fibromyalgia. Many people have found pain relief with high-quality CBD products and have found that CBD can help them manage their symptoms without side effects. Some of the best CBD oils are affordable and easily obtainable. You can buy CBD on the internet almost anywhere in the U.S.

CBD for fibromyalgia can be used topically for sore muscles or on the temples for headaches. Applying topical CBD products seeps through the skin and works to relax fibromyalgia pain at the level of the skin’s receptors. CBD acts at the level of the skin by activating the endocannabinoid system, binding to cell receptors in muscles, skin, and nerves, and alleviating pain. CBD applied topically does not reach the bloodstream.

In addition, CBD can be taken orally as an oil, tincture, or supplement and absorbed through the digestive tract or the bloodstream as steam or smoke. CBD tinctures and oils can be applied under the tongue for absorption into the bloodstream via the large vein located directly underneath the tongue or swallowed and absorbed through the gastrointestinal tract. Absorption is faster through the bloodstream. CBD oil can also be inhaled through the lungs as steam using a vaporizer or through a vape cartridge as smoke.

The effects of CBD can be felt within 5-6 minutes of inhalation, whereas the digestive tract may take up to six hours for results to be noticed. You won’t feel “high” but more of a sense of well-being and relaxation with an easing of anxiety.

CBD Effects On Fibromyalgia

CBD’s effects may include an anti-anxiety, a sleep cycle regulator, an anti-inflammatory, and an antidepressant. The results of CBD may include the regulation of fibromyalgia pain within the body and may lessen headaches associated with the disorder. Patients who use CBD for their fibromyalgia treatment may find that taking CBD makes their mood better and gives them a better quality of life. Clearly, more research is needed on CBD’s effects on fibromyalgia as a disease entity, particularly in human clinical trials.

Frequently Asked Questions

What CBD is best for fibromyalgia?

Spruce CBD and Pure CBD are both good oils for pain due to their trace amounts of THC.

How long does it take for CBD to work on fibromyalgia?

Since there are no studies to go on, we don’t know. Observational results suggest that one to three weeks is necessary to affect the pain of fibromyalgia and to stimulate pain relief related to new bone growth. Another study[11] on anxiety and sleep in 103 patients showed results in one month. Many of these studies are looking at the symptoms that manifest in fibromyalgia rather than directly at fibromyalgia as a condition and CBD as a treatment. Cumulative benefits will occur with continued use. If you are using topicals, such as for a headache, benefits may be noticed within 30 minutes of application although one study on neuropathic pain indicated a treatment period of four weeks. The type of pain will affect the treatment duration for effective relief of symptoms.

Does CBD oil help with fibromyalgia symptoms?

Studies have shown that CBD helps with the symptoms associated with fibromyalgia pain and disability such as sleep, anxiety-related depression, and anti-inflammatory-related pain.

What is the best painkiller for fibromyalgia?

Cymbalta, an antidepressant, and amitriptyline are two antidepressants used for pain. Savella is another antidepressant frequently used to control fibromyalgia and treat the depression that accompanies the pain.

What is a CBD isolate?

An isolate is CBD oil that only has CBD in it, and no other cannabinoids, terpenes, or flavonoids. It is what the FDA-approved CBD drug is (Epidiolex), a CBD isolate.

What is a CBD broad-spectrum product?

These products contain terpenes, flavonoids, and CBD but zero THC.

Is CBD legal to sell?

CBD is legal to sell based on the passage of the U.S. Farm Bill

Will fibromyalgia worsen with age?

Possibly. However, it is not a progressive disease meaning it will not get worse over time.
